Learn to Sail - Spinnaker Sailing
Spinnaker Sailing of Redwood City is located at the Port of Redwood City, the southern most deep water port in San Francisco Bay. The South Bay provides great day sailing opportunities with strong northwest breezes almost every afternoon, April through September. The wind is typically mild in the morning and reaches maximum strength between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. This provides easy going for those heading north in the morning and great running and reaching conditions for the return sail in the afternoon.
Nearby harbors include Coyote Point and San Leandro. A little further and more suitable for overnight sailing trips are San Francisco, Sausalito and the other harbors of the North Bay. Tidal currents in the South Bay provide up to about 2 knots of current that can be timed to maximize range when day cruising. It’s possible to sail all the way to the north day and back in one day when currents are favorable. Local day sailing remains popular with warmer air and water temperature than elsewhere in the Bay Area.
