Learn to Sail - Sawyer’s Sailing School

Sawyer’s Sailing School is located at the Dolphin Marina in about the middle of Casco Bay. By turning north or northeast one can cruise among the 365 Calendar Islands or turn south and move along the coast on the open Atlantic. This is one of Maine’s outstanding cruising areas.

The prevailing winds during the sailing season (June thru Sept) usually arrive daily about noon and are usually a steady 10 to 15 knots from the southwest dropping off at twilight. Knowledge of navigation is essential in view of occasional fog and multitudes of ledges.

Casco Bay is bordered on the southern end by Maine’s largest city of Portland and is not too far from L.L. Bean’s in the shopping center of Freeport  midway along its coast. Seafood restaurants are numerous with the Dolphin Marina restaurant’s specialty of fish chowder and hot blueberry muffins being outstanding.
