Learn to Sail - Marina Sailing

Marina Sailing’s fleet of sail and powerboats, located in the best sailing and sight seeing areas on the West Coast, offers our members their choice of six harbor locations: Channel Islands, Marina del Rey, Redondo Beach, King Harbor, Long Beach Shoreline Village, Newport Beach, and San Diego. Each location has its own unique charm and range of activities. With temperatures in the mid 80’s in the summer, and mild winters, our members sail year round. marina

From Channel Islands Harbor you can choose a day sail to Anacapa Island, 18 miles off the coast, or cruise down the beautiful coastline. With the North Easterlies averaging 15k, there is usually plenty of wind for a perfect sail. Another favorite destination is Santa Cruz Island, and for the adventurous, Santa Barbara Island.  After that refreshing sail, there are many great restaurants around the harbor to feed the crew.

Marina del Rey is noted for its central location and abundance of activities. You can day sail to Palos Verdes, and up to Malibu, or set your course on Catalina Island.  Here, sailors enjoy 10 to 15knot winds year round, and smooth sailing in the bay.  If you are looking for fun shore activities, this is the place for famous concerts, fabulous hotels, and fantastic restaurants.  marina

Redondo Beach, King Harbor is where you would expect to find Captain Hook.  It is a rustic harbor with natural life all around.  This is a great harbor to enjoy Sea Lions, Pelicans, and get a glimpse of a Humpback Whale or two during their mating season.  It is a short run out to the open ocean, where you can sail past famous fishing piers, and enjoy scenic cliffs and beautiful beaches.  The weather is great year round with an average of 12 knots of wind and smooth seas.

Long Beach, Shoreline Village Harbor, the closest harbor to Catalina Island, is a perfect get-away destination for the weekend.  Only 18 miles on a beam reach you will land in Two Harbors, and just a stretch farther is the famous Avalon Harbor.  But, for day sailors, the large harbor with its brisk winds averaging 15 knots, famous ships, majestic bridges, and smooth sailing, altogether will satisfy that sailor’s lust from days of yor.  Around the village are many spots for live music and great grub. marina

Newport Beach harbor is the base for the famous Ensenada Race, and one of the largest harbors in the world.  You can sail all day in the harbor or out on the bay, with smooth sailing conditions, 10 – 12 knots of wind consistent year round, and Catalina Island only a day trip away. The harbor hosts a variety of gorgeous yachts docked around the marinas, and on private landings.    On shore there are many famous restaurants, a large amusement park, and rocking night clubs.

San Diego Harbor, world renown for the home of America’s Cup racers, is central to yachting activities of all kinds.  If you want to see the latest in yachting design, you will find it here.  The bay is perfect for sailing, and outside the harbor you will experience mild wind and sea conditions year round.  Activities around town can’t be beat with famous parks, the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and much more!
